Barb Darrow over on GigaOm writes about Steve Wozniak lamenting the lack of ownership of our digital lives in a cloud-centric world. His point may be moot, but not because it is without merit.
Rather, the great thing about tech today is the speed at which the market decides what is and is not acceptable. If enough people are worried about the security of their digital lives in the cloud they will:
Avoid the cloud entirelyFind the technologies from companies who promise security that meets their needs
Either way, market forces will drive what happens. Maybe we don’t really care. Or, maybe the personal cloud will eventually fall on its face because people just don’t ant/need/trust it, or someone will come along with the proverbial “better mousetrap.” Either way, we all win.
The same goes for our personal presence via social media. We all probably know people who cover the social media spectrum from “I don’t even know/care what Facebook and Twitter is”
to
“I don’t go more than 10 minutes without posting something to Facebook.”
If enough people decide that because of security, privacy or ownership that Facebook et al is not such a good idea after all, the paradigm will change or they (Facebook and company) will die.
