Five Reasons HTML 5 Will Succeed in the Mobile, Post PC, Cloud Era

Apr 12, 2012

As a Web App company you would expect us to be very bullish on HTML 5 and the latest developments in the JavaScript space. Our development team is very busy creating the next generation of Open-Xchange aggressively using the combination of HTML 5 and the latest JavaScript implementations. My five reasons that HTML 5/JS combo will succeed in the mobile, post-PC era of cloud computing are:

Always, AnywhereHTML 5/JS enables apps to be delivered via the browser – and only the browser. No plug-ins or clients required. People want access to personal and business information from anywhere from any device— which are increasingly mobile. HTML 5/JS is ubiquitous and will work on most devices.

Impact on design of interfacesHTML 5/JS enables application developers to create beautiful and responsive user interfaces that users expect today.

Local storage capabilitiesHTML 5/JS provides local storage capability, offline caching for those times when mobile access is cut off or not available. That enables users to continue being productive, even when off-line or on a slow or shaky connection.

Lightweight technologyThe combination of thin apps delivered via the browser and local storage, offline caching capability facilitates highly-efficient delivery of software as a service (SaaS), where users receive automatic updates and instant product improvements, also cutting delivery and desktop management costs to a bare minimum, enabling “bring your own device” strategies.

Open gardensFinally, and this is a big one, apps created with HTML 5 are not hostage to app stores’ walled gardens, where companies like Apple take 30 percent of app sales revenue. Now, apps have alternative routes to market, including their own website. Disney and The Financial Times are examples of companies already doing this.

You sure have noticed by now that we believe the future of HTML 5/JS is very bright indeed and encourage everyone to adopt the technology.

We are looking forward to discuss this topic with you via Twitter using #html5succeeds or on our Facebook page.
